Application timeline and important dates
Cohorts kickoff twice a year.
The next cohort will run June - December, 2017.
Applications will be open March 1, 2017 throurh March 30, 2017.
Applicants for this next cohort can choose between attending a kickoff weekend in either:
How much time will be required of me?
Time spent per person will depend on your goals for the program. As an example, someone joining the cohort looking to change careers and is not employed during the program will spend more hours than someone who is doing this while holding a full time job. We do ask for a minimum committment of the following:
Once the in-person immersive is complete, you can expect to spend about 5-10 hours per week on the central programming. Your Experteering project is in addition to this. An additional 10-15 hours of readiness reading is required before the in-person weekend.
Why is there a program tuition?
While this program has structure, it is ultimately a personalized experience. The program fee allows us to dedicate personal time to you, while also supporting cohort-wide initiatives. In addition to all the other program benefits like curriculum, exposure, and networking, you’ll also get one-on-one time with:
The MovingWorlds matching team to find you the best possible project
A mentor will be assigned to you that matches to your career goals
The MWI team for personalized suggestions for ongoing learning recommendations
Lastly, the program fee also covers your costs for the 3-day in-person immersive.
What is / is not covered in the program tuition?
The program tution covers all of the benefits listed above as well as 3 nights of lodging and 3 days of meals during the in-person kickoff immersive.
Please note that the lodging provided is for a double-occupandcy hotel room at a 3-start hotel. If you desire, you can select for an upgrade to a single room by working with the MovingWorlds team.
What happens during the 3-day in-person immersive?
There are two in-person immersives for this cohort, and you should pick the one that is best for your location and schedule. The in-person immersive is a dynamic gathering where you will get to know your fellow cohort members and receive essential training to prepare you to be as effective as possible during your in-country placement. In tandem, you'll go through interactive, case-based curriculum on design thinking and shared value that will help you as an Experteer, and more importantly, throughout your future career.
In the process, you'll get exposure to speakers, mentors, and the program team so they can get to know you better. They'll use that insight to help structure the rest of the program — including your mentorship selection, field placement, and career coaching — in a way that truly helps you.
Why are there two kickoff cities, and where are they?
One cohort, two kickoff cities. We have overwhelming demand from around the world, and while it's critical that we keep locations that are accesible, it's also critical that cohorts are limited in size so that meaningful time can be spent building connections with your fellow participants. We also need to limit locations to increase diversity in the program. The two kickoff cities in opposite areas of the globe allow us to create a more powerful global cohort, while also balancing the need for each cohort to remain diverse.
What does "Weekly Engagement mean?
One of the greatest strengths of MWI is the support and learning provided by your fellow cohort members. On our private, online Slack community, you will connect with other MWI Fellows and get a chance to share best practices gained from experience in the field, provide feedback on their projects, and ask for advice on the issues and opportunities coming up with your own. In addition, we'll hold additional topic-specific calls on specific issues.
What will I do during the monthly presentations with industry leaders?
Each month during your 6-month fellowship, we will host calls with industry leaders, who will share anecdotes from their experiences running successful global social enterprises that you can take forward to influence not only your MWI project but your impact focused career for years to come.
Are there scholarships?
Scholarships are assigned based on need. If you want to join the program but can’t commit the capital, send us an additional letter along with your application proving you want to participate and explaining why you need a scholarship.
Beyond scholarships, we are happy to support you in thinking through a crowdfunding campaign (using a tool like GoFundMe or FundMyTravel), which other Experteers in our network have used to creatively fund their experience by engaging their friends, families, colleagues and communities. Other tips to finance an international experience like this can be found on this article.
Will I get college credit for this program?
While we do not have a formal certification authority with a university, some colleges may consider your field experience gained in this program as credit-worthy. You’ll have to work with your college’s admin office. We can help provide a letter of support.
Will the program count as continuing professional education for my professional license?
It depends. We do not carry any formal partnerships. It’s up to you to appeal to your certification body asking for them to count this. We can help provide a letter of support.
Can my company pay for me?
Need help convincing them? Check out these resources:
Need more help? Engage MovingWorlds to help your company build a corporate volunteering program - independent or connected with the MovingWorlds institute.
Can I join as a group?
Yes, but we’ll work hard to make you split up your work and projects. You'll get more out of the experience working with new people and exposing yourself to new circumstances.
